HOUSE EXPRESSES APPROVAL RACE FOR ARMAMENTS AMERICA NOT SETTING PACE. -tV CABLE PRESS ASSOCIATION— COPYRktH? Received 10.10 a.m. to-day. WASHINGTON, March 17. The House of Representatives passed the Naval Bill by a vote of 237 to 58. The measure now goes to the Senate. The visitors’ gallery was filled with representatives of many peace societies opposing the Bill, these rising and leaving the chamber when the result was announced.
Air. Butler said later: “We have proposed a substantial addition to the fleet. I am hoi>eful the Senate will concur in our conclusions. We are serving notice on the world that the United States intends to round out its fleet without any intention of forcing the pace in building armament.” “It is understood Mr. Butler and his colleagues will resist any possible effort in the Senate to augment the programme.
