CANADIAN PIGS.
IMPORTATION FOR DOMINION FIB ST CLASS BACON PRODUCERS Some 30 head of first class Canadian swine have been imported into the Dominion by breeders. The latest consignment arrived by Waitemata from Vancouver. and comprised seven Berkshire and Tamwortli pigs. Until about six months ago the Government restrictions prohibited the importation of pigs into this country on account of the dangers of swine disease, but the Department of Agriculture then decided to allow Canadian breeds to be imported. Taking advantage of this some leading New Zealand breeders immediately placed orders for the highest grade Canadian stock. The pigs which arrived by Waitemata were consigned tO' S. Austin Carr, and will he taken to his farm at Morrinsville. The Canadian Trade Commissioner has interested himself in the matter and has arranged that orders shall be executed under the personal direction of George B. Roth well, one of the leading live stock experts of the Dominion who is attached to the central experimental fa'rm at Ottawa. “This arrangement ensures that only the best swine will leave Canada for New Zealand, stated Air. Paul Sykes, assistant Trade Commissioner. “Air. Rothwell and other officials are taking the greatest interest in this development, and are taking every step to see that New- Zealand breeders secure the very best stock available.” In Canada they felt they had made great progress in breeding the bacon type of hog, their success being illustrated by the increased demand for Canadian stock in the markets of the United Kingdom. While it was felt that Canadian stock would improve New Zealand stock the possibility of a greater market in Canada for New Zealand live sheep and frozen mutton apd lamb was worth investigation.
