DAVIS GUP COMMITTEE

Much surprise has been caused by the announcement of the Davis Cup committee that it will not adopt the suggestion of the association, and instead lias unanimously adopted a resolution “That in view of the strength of the nations challenging in the American zone, it is resolved that the association will not divide it® strength by sending a team to Europe in advance of American zone play, hut will select our strongest team to play in the American zone, in an eiiort to qualify for the inter-zone final.” This is considered to he a direct blow against Tilden. A cable message on February 11 stated: Tilden and Hunter announced to-day that they are ready to accede to the request by the Davis Cup committee to compete for the United States in either American or interzone Davis Cup play. NORTH v. SOUTH MATCH

SOUTHERN TEAM OUTCLASSED

The South Taranaki representative t,cnnis team journeyed to New Plymouth last Saturday, when they were decisively bealten by the northerners by 21 matches and 255 games to 3 matches and 185 games. 'The matches were played on the New' Plymouth Club’s courts.

In. the men’s singles Strombom, playing third .in the North team, Avas the only player to be beaten by a Southern player, although Ballantyne Avas fully extended bv Beck, both matches going to three sets. The ladies of the Southern team Avere unable to gain a Avin in the singles, although the fifth and sixth players fully extended their opponents. The Northern representative, Miss Malcolm, Avas outstanding in her play in the ladies ’ singles. Tavo Avins and one loss were the score of North Taranaki in the men’s doubles. Playing first and second respectively for" North, Ellis and (Strombom and Berg and Unvin were compelled to play their utmost to stave off defeat by the Southerners. Torrens 'hud Jones (South) playing Ellis and Strombom at B—78 —7 had tAvo match points. Torrcns, playing one of his characteristic back-hand drives, missed the line by a fraction of an inch. The only other loss sustained by the Northerners during the day Avas in the combined doubles, Avhen (Miss Malcolm and .Strombom were defeated by Mrs Pudge and Jones.
