Workers employed by proprietors of petrol pumps are now provided with protection' by the Arbitration Court, which has amended the Dominion Motor .Mechanics’ Award in order to control the conditions of employment for there workers. A new clause affecting proprietors selling oil and petrol only as a side line to their own business, provides that an employee not engaged substantially as a petrol and oil attendant is to work solely under the provisions of the award governing the conditions of labour in his principal business. This clause necessitates the payment of overtime rates to workers employed outside the prescribed hours. An employer employing workers substantially in the sale of petrol and oil will be bound by clause seven of the award. A young woman, who was charged with theft at Christchurch, furnished the following list showing how some of the money had been expended: Presents to England' at Christmas and birthdays, £3O; party in St. Albans (band £5 ss, supper and novelties £lO, hall £1 10s), £l6 15s; party in Fitzgerald Avenue, £10; frocks, £80; tailors, £7O; hats and shoes and repairs, £25; rent at Sumner for one year, £65; holiday at Dunedin at Easter, 1926, £SO; trip to Akaroa after Easter, 1926, £4 10s; trip to Akaroa, February, 1927, £6; presents of silver cigarette cases, £5; lunches, £25; tennis fees, £3; glasses for mother, £1 19s 6d; various fetes, £2O; keep of brother and sisters for nearly three months, £9O; serviette ring and cigarette box, £10: smoker’s stand. £3 3s; photographs, £10; furniture, £35; and gramophone and records, £sl.
