WOMAN ADMITS CHARGE OF SHOPLIFTING. (BY TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION.) AUCKLAND, Jan. 29. Described as a -woman of means, Eileen Mary Williams, aged 29, who was caught in the act of stealing two pairs of silk stockings from Millie and Choyee’s drapery establishment, pleaded guilty at the Police Court this morning. :She also admitted the theft of a dress- valued' at 29s 6d. All assistant detected the accused placing the stockings in a bag.

The chief, detective said that there were goods in the woman’s house which looked suspicious, but the police could not lay a charge in respect of them. Counsel for the accused -said that her husband could offer only one explanation, that her mind was affected by a wound on the side of her head. She had led a useful life and had done a lot of good for the community. The Magistrate doubted whether he should not make a penalty of imprisonment, but imposed a fine of £lO, the alternative being 14 days’ imprisonment. Application for the suppression of the name was refused.
