THE NORTHUMBERLAND.
NO MATERIAL CHANGE. (by TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION.) GLSBORNE, Jan. 27. A large staff of men is still busy on the Federal liner Northumberland. Since the second hole was discovered late last night the crew have been busy making a mat. The second hole was found to be five feet long, in the shape of a crack and situated about five feet aft of the first hole, apparently indicating that the ship struck two pinnacles, one higher than the other. The mat for the second hole was placed in position by a diver and wired on. The tug Terawhiti is engaged in pumping operations and the water in No. 1 hold had been reduced by eight feet tonight. The crew are now engaged in making one large mat to cover the two smaller holes. Niven’s staff at Gisborne is engaged in making an iron plate twenty feet by sixteen, to cover the first hole in the hull.
Except for a slight lessening of the list there is no material change in the ship’s position. The sea is still calm.
