ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
* WASHED OFF THE ROCKS. (BY telegraph —eiiess ASSOCIATION./ DARG AVILLFi, Jan. 24. Two men named Edward O’Neill, a .storekeeper at Donnelly’s Crossing, aqd i nomas Leigh, stationmaster, went on a fishing excursion at SMaunganui B-iiuff on Sundav. While fishing off the rocks a huge wave came up and washed both off. Leigh manageu to struggle ashore, but his companion was npt seen ■ body has not been recovered. The deceased was a married man aged about 40. He leaves a wife and unify of four young children. He was particular,lv well known, in this district, having filled a number of responsible positions. The bluff is a particularly dangerous .spot for fishing when the sea is rough. Several people have; lost their lives there. MOTOR, LORRY GOES OVER BANK HASTINGS, Jan. 24. A: motor lorry, carrying food for the post and telegraph picnic yesterday, met with lau accident while negotiating a, steep hill on the way to Waimarama beach. Tlhe brakes failed to act just before a hairpin bend was reached, the lorrv went into, the bank at the bond with such force that it flung out the occupants and somersaulted twice, coming to rest on its wheels against a fence. Miss Bay Symes sustained a broken collar-bone, Pat Has sett, and Arthur Wardrop, telegraph boy. a broken, leg and arm, respectively. Three others received minor injuries.
