R. A. ROSE.

ANOTHER. VISIT TO HAWERA. R, A, Rose, the New Zealand champion distance runner, whose 4mm. 13 2-ssec for the mile placed his tune amongst the best perf orin anctes ever made over that distance, will make liis second appearance in six months in Hiawena to-morrow afternoon. Rose’s name is one to conjure with, as outstanding amongst the stayers this country lias produced. Rose s career has raised him increasingly an the estimation of amateur sportsmen. His businesslike and economical trip abroad in pursuit of track records overseas had but indifferent luck as .regards successful results, but the character of the runner has been the better esteemed by the people of New Zealnad since he returned. Though lac-k----ing the incentive of international competition as lent by Hahn, and the benefit of competition provided by the American who established Australasia s best half mile on the Egmont A. and P. Sl l owg rounds, Rose has lie vertl 1 Ciess been, running faster miles lately than are usually to be found at New Zealand champion ship meetings. He was down among the twenties in the odd seconds above four minutes in ft mile run quite recently in Hawke’s Bay. It is reasonable to. hope, therefore, that lie is in good condition, and will give a good account of himself upon his return to compete in a centre which he frankly admits, .appeals to him. Local runners are keen .about Rose. His name has been mentioned in connection with the Caledonian Society’s Sports, but his entry lias been problematic. When, therefore, word was received this morning from Mr. D. Clement, of lit ham, that his entry lhad been .received in the half-mile of Wednesday’s Caledonian sports, the good news w;a.s quickly circulated round the town, and general loongrattuiliations exchanged. Rose promised, upon his last visit, to return. He said he would compete at the Caledonian sports if his farm work permitted. A relative in Kith a in. who works in the office of the Chieftain Clement, has kept in close contact with the Wairarapa athlete, and he received advice lat the last moment that tb' long miler would be able to come to Taranaki this week. Though not accustomed to the 880 yards, Rose lias entered for the middle distance. On his last appearance in Hawera. he fin-ish-eel just out of ia place in the. half one of the few occasions on which he —originally tai three-nailer—has come down to the two-lap event. He. has also entered for the mile. These events are not well situated on the pro- . gramme, Tlhe 880 is due to start at 3.5. and the mile at 3.45. The respite is a- .short one. Rose’s name is not included on the programme, but he will run from scratch, and the handicap of other competitors will remain unaltered. Hi.s nearest opponents arc F. C. Gilmour (New Plymouth) off 10vd-s in the half mile, and A. _Rumball (Havre ra) off 45yd,s in the mile.
