CARRIAGE-LOCOMOTIVE.

NEW SOUTH ISLAND VEHICLE. A. new type oi locomotive was seen at the Christchurcn railway station on {Saturday morning, says a. Christchurch exchange. It was the Clayton selfcontained steam carriage, which has been secured by the. Rail way Department tor use on the Oamaru-Kurovv 11 ranch line, a run of lorry miles. Lite carriage was brought on its own steam from Lyttelton, where it was landed a few days ago alter successfully going through trial runs in the North Island, and departed at 10.30 o’clock for Oa in am. The new locomotive resembles the electric car now in use on the Lyttelton run, being ot the same colour (red) and ot similar lines. It is not quite so elaborately fitted as the electric car, however, but for ail that it is quite comfortable. Ample accommodation is provided for nlty-six passengers. The .seats are loomy and will easily take two, the number they were designed to hold. Electric light has been installed. The carriage derives its power from a 70 h.p. engine and boiler, which are mounted over a power bogey at one of its extremities. The power is sufficient to propel the locomotive at speeds up to forty miles an hour. The locomotive may be controlled from either end, platforms similar to those, in use on the ordinary electric trains having been mounted on it for this purpose. Economy was the keynote of the design of the locomotive. Its, coal consumption, when it is travelling at full speed, amounts to about one hundredweight every four miles. The carriage when fully fuelled can carry coal sufficient to take it a hundred miles, and water ample for sixty miles. The locomotive is British built t , and lias already earned the confidence of the Railway Department.
