TO-DAY’S SITTING

The foil nightly session of the Alagistrate’s Court at Haivera was continued this morning, Air J. S. Barton, S.AL, presiding. John C. Ratter, who sent a, writteh plea of guilty to a charge ol 1 ailing to keep as near as practicable to the left when driving a car front Victoria into High Street on the evening cl June 29, wa,s fined £1 and 7s costs. Hrne,st S. Bennett, who pleaded guilty to a. charge of having driven a, car, not equipped with two lights, along the Glover Road on the evening of July 17, was fined LOs and 7s costs. Sergeant Henry stated that a lady cyclist had been run into from the rear and knocked down by the car, with the resu't that she had obtained a broken arm. There was, however, no suggestion of negligent driving. Kor defendant. Air F. C. Spratt submitted that the absence of one light, the other having been shown, was not the cause of the accident. The wet weather and the brilliant headlights bad interfered to a certain extent with the driver’s, ranges of vision, and he failed to see tli e cyclist, who had just turned into the road from a side route. In maintenance proceedings, Queenie Jewell was granted a separation order against her husband, Frederick Jewell, and the guardianship of two children, aged 10 and six years respectively. Defendant. who did not appear, was ordered to pay 30s weekly as maintenance to complainant and 12s 6d weekly in respect of each of the children.
