A pugilistic encounter, which was not held under the auspices of the Wanganui Boxing Association, took place the other day (say® the Chronicle). A nine-year -old hoy was anxious, to treat two of his friends* to th € , pictures, hut lacked the money necessary, for their admission fees. His nimble Irish mind conceived a splendid idea* —a placard announcing a “great- coxing contest; admission threepence.” In a short time the “ring,” occupied by the promoter and a- sparring partner, was surrounded hv a two-shilling “house,” the scene of the encounter being his aunt’s kitchen. The return of the- aunt prevented the contest going the full distance, but the promoter made a. triumphant entry at the pictures that night. All who contributed in any way to the success- of the Women’s National Reserve charity dance earlier in the week will be pleased to hear that the W.N.R.. Distress Fund will benefit by approximately £l2. The dance was remarkable for the presence of so many men in uniform, these greatly appreciating the relief of such a break in camp life.
