Mr. H. D. Aol.and (chairman of the Board of Governors of the Canterbury College) said that hostels, playing fields and libraries were urgently needed for university colleges in New Zealand. Colleges were suffering from a lamentable Lack of vision on the part of the founders. Christchurch bad suffered greatly. New Zealand University, as constituted, could not continue much longer. The attitude of Auckland apparently was to place the claims of that city before t'ue rest of the Dominion, without any regard to Dominion interests.

UNAUTHORISED USE OF CAR. HAMILTON, July 9. At the Magistrate’s Court a jockey named James Tinker was charged with converting a motor-ear to his own without the colour of right, also with dangerous driving and driving without a license. Evidence was given that the car was being driven swiftly, when it skidded and went over a bank. The owner had not given the accused permission to use the car. The accused said he had been sitting in the ear with the owner and other men. The owner left, whereupon one man suggested having a ride, saying that the owner would not mind. The accused wa, fined £lO on. each of the first two charges, and £1 on the third.

BIGAMY ALLEGED. CHRISTCHURCH, July 9. John George Burgess, aged 58, a builder, was charged with bigamy this morning, and was remanded for a week. Bail amounting to £2OO was allowed. Professor Powell said that since the school of engineering had been merged into the rest of the Canterbury Colleges there had beern a growing tendency in some quarters to regard it merely as a department and not as a national schoof' of engineering. During the last fortnight burglars have raided eight city shops and warehouses, gaining entrance with jemmy. Most of the loot consists of tobacco and cigarettes. fAt one place £SO in cash was taken. FATALITY AT LEVEL CROSSING. INVERCARGILL,- 'July 9. AYliilc returning from a champion ploughing match, a tractor wa, struck bv the Lumsden train at West Plains crossing. Allan Mclntosh, the driver, had both legs broken and suffered internal injuries, from which ho died few hour's later. A brother .who was sitting behind was thrown clear and without a scratch.
