TIME OF STARTING SCHOOL.
(To the Editor.) Sir, —The proposal of the main U.awera School to open half-an-hour earlier in the morning has created some discussion amongst parents. The teachers themselves apparently are the chief agitators for the change, and they at present enjoy shorter weekly hours of work and longer holidays per annum than most workers. They forget that children's education is only partly accompli sihed during school hours. Most children have small duties to perform for their mothers before School, and where children are learning music the morning is the natural time to practice-. Eac-h evening, so far as my own. children are concerned, is wholly taken up with, preparation ■for the next day’s school work. Many mothers are tied to their houses, and relv upon the children very much for odd messages before school. Anotjier and perhaps the most important point of all, from a mother’s standpoint, m the lengthening oif the morning -school hours, which, for the winter months espeein.ly, 1 consider arb quite loing enough already.—l am, etc., MERELY A. MOTHER. Hawera, May 11.
