FIRE IN HAWERA.

NINE-IK)OI\LKI> HOUSE GUTTEI). Between 1L and 12 o'clock laat night, file completely gutted a. nine-roomed residence in Wellington Street occupied by Mr. C. Steer and family. The outbreak originated in the kitchen, and when discovered by Mr. Steer had developed to such an extent that the telephone in the bakehouse at. the hack could not he reached. The flameis spread rapidly, atul Mr. Steer, who had to attend to other occupants in the house, wa.s not ablej to give the alarm. It wa® only when the reflection in the sky was noticed by Constable Muillan that the fire brigade was communicated with. When the brigade arrived in record time after being informed of the fire, the outbreak had gone too far to allow of the building being saved, and consequently it was badlv gutted when the flames were eventually suppressed. The house was owned bv the Misses Costley, of Wellington. The insurance on the building was £750 in the Phoenix Office. It is stated that Mr. Steer had the contents o.f the.building insured but it is believed that the policy had. lapsed.
