A return, showing the mortgages registered from March 31st, 1897, to March 31st, 1898, shows £6,702,081 was raised, and £'5,516,598 paid off. Canterbury and Otago paid off £25,601 and £128,669 respectively more than was lent. The North Island increased its debt by a net amount of £1,318,767, and the South reduced it by £133,284. The average rate of interest is about 5J- per cent.
