The Native Elections.
Great interest was taken in the result of the Native election yesterday, each telegram as it came being eagerly scanned. From the latest news last night it appears that James Carroll is leading by 82 votes, and that the only return to come (Ruataniwha) is likely to be in his favour. For the Northern District Taiwhanga is unfortunately ahead of Katene with 621 to 543, but as there are yet seven returns to coms in, the result may be eventually materially altered. For the Western Electorate Te Wheoro heads the poll with 952 against Taipua’s 942, but several returns have yet to come, and the result is likely to be in Taipua’s favour.
