Those who have seen the convict Thomas Hall since his incarceration in Mount Eden Gaol, Auckland, state that he looks like a man of 50. A somewhat mysterious murder has been committed at Roma, Queensland. Mr Edwin Hawkins, the chairman of the Manilla Divisional Gourd, was found dead in his bed at Tieryboo station one morning recently, having been shot through the head, evidently when asleep. The bullet had passed through the pillows and bedding, and was found on the floor. Mr Hawkins appeared not to have moved, and death must have been instantaneous. Tae ball had entered the back oi his head. The only white people in the dwelling that night were the servant man, named G. W. Clayton, and his wife. The sergeant of police has arrested Clayton on suspicion 0 f having committed the murder The deceased was a son of the Rev. W. C. Hawkins, Church of England. Minister Wavorley, and had been nearly six years in charge of the Tieryboo station for Captain Boyd. He was a young man.
