Married women are suggesting that their husbands should celebrate the Jubilee by coming home earlier of an evening for at least one year.
The Weekly Register says :—“There is to be an interchange of jubilee congratulations and offerings between the Holy Father and Queen V ictoria. Her Majesty presents to the Pontiff a rare and richly bound edition of the Vulgate, and his Holiness gives her Majesty a superb mosaic,” A new society is being formed by aristocratic English ladies of the Catholic faith, to be called the society of the White Rose. The object of the organisation is to defend the Throne and Constitution against the attacks of Anarchism, and its ultimate aim will be the restoration of a Catholic dynasty England.
Arrangements are being made (says the Southland Times) to hold a band contest, open to all except garrison bands, in Sloan’s Theatre on November 8 next. Twenty-one bands have been communicated with, and it n probable that some 15 or 16 of these will heter. A contest of a similar description was enld on the --.me date last year, and the intion is to makethe event an annual one.
