Importers Pleased-— But Not Satisfied

WELLINGTON, November 11

Mr G. Riley, secretary, of the N.Z. Retailers’ Federation, said that the increase in the import licences for hosiery for the year 1950, from 50 per cent, to 100 per cent, of the 1949 liwas appreciated by the trade. He said they estimated that at least 350 per cent, of 1949 licences would be necessary to meet reasonable consumer needs and also enable traders to hold some basic stocks. His federation recently conducted a survey among a representative cross-section of women, and found that the average yearly requirements of .. . womenfolk over 16 years of age were 12 pairs. He said: “The federation; is of the opinion that the Government .has in mind the distribution of approximately six pairs by way of local manufacture and from imports, so that the reason for continued shortage and lack of stocks is understandable”.
