MOTOR BRAKES NOT ALL SAFE

WELLINGTON, November 4 Returns so far received by the Transport Department in its national brake check show that about 4.5 per cent, of motor vehicles examined have poor brakes. In last year’s campaign 10 per cent, had poor brakes. At the end of the first two weeks of the check on brakes, 4008 motor vehicles had been tested. Of these 2528 had good brakes, 1291 fair brakes and 189 poor, non-conforming brakes. Inspectors making the check issued 78 traffic offence notices. Of 12'02 private cars tested in the second week of the check 698 had good. 428 fair, and 77 poor brakes. A check of 385 Jight trucks showed 225 with good, 143 with fair,’and 17 with poor brakes. Of the heavy trucks tested, 164 had good, 85 fair, and nine poor brakes. Seventy-thre e other vehicles also had their brakes tested and of these only one had poor brakes. The inspectors report, that many owners have taken notice of preliminary publicity abouh the' brake check and had had their brake? adjusted.
