RACING NOTES

It has been reporter, that the Invercargill trainer, F. W. Ellis, does not intend continuing Excellency’s New Zealand Cup engagement, but this 5 s not so. Excellency is to race today at Winton and again at the Southland meeting a week later, and her form at these meetings will influence her trainer whether to take her to Riccarton.

There is nothing wrong with Excellency’s condition. Purple Sage will be the favourate today in the Winton Stakes, the first Southland two-year-old race for the season. She is a Royal Chief filly from Sally Sage, the" dam of Bragden and All Alone. Purple Sage has shown marked ability in training, and in barrier trials outclassed several others her own age. One likely to test Purple Sage is Rosehaven, a Pictavia filly from a sister to a good class winner in High Play.

R. E. McLellan has five runners in the Soldier’s Memorial Handicap, chief event at Winton. Aganev, Jimmy the One, Bragden, All Alone, and Billy Mac are all members of his team. Aganev’s Gore form pointed to her being an early winner, but she is at a place in'the weights where she will not find matters easy. Bragden, AU Alone and Billy Mac are newcomers to open company. All Alone has shown good class hack form up to a mile and her latest training suggests that she is ready to show up in the higher grade. Vitamin took the sprint honours at Riccarton when she ran half a mile on the trial grass in 46sec. C. T. Wilson will ride Signal Officer in the New Zealand Cup on November 19, and he will probably be on Flying Sovereign in the Stewards’ Handicap. He/ returns on Tuesday from Melbourne.

A Riccarton apprentice, M. R. Jones will ride Ballochmyle in the Stewards’ Handicap. Ballochmyle took no harm from his races at the Wellington spring meeting, where he won the Belmont Hack Handicap. An interesting hack sprinter to reappear at Winton is the Pictavia filly. Plausible, a two-year old winner last season. She has shown brilliant speed in her training work at Invercargill. Betula (C. McDonald) sprinted ner last three furlongs on the grass in 39 3-ssec in a Riccarton work-out. The Foxbridge flllly lost a winning chance in the Karitane Handicap at Trentham when she hung out in the straight, and was beaten by half a head by Zenith.

Floral Flight galloped nicely to finish in front of Feckett and a Royal Arch—Lady Rampion filly, with Margie (Royal Arch —White Doe filly) further back at the end of half a mile ,in 48 3-ssec. These four fillies are in R. P. Register’s team. Lexia (P. H. Jones) ran her mile in lnrin 17 3-ssec, coming home the last half in 52sec.

Magical (M. H. Hillis) galloped keenly to record lmin 3 2-ssec lor five furlongs,, the last three in 37 3-5 sec., on the plough.

Maryburn (M. H. Hillis) was just shading Peridot (R. W. Gould) after running nine furlongs in lmin 59 2-5 sec, the last half mile- in 54 3-ssec. Both are in good order. Skyzami (M, R. Jones) covered live furlongs in lmin 5 3-ssec, and came home the last three in 39 3-ssec. Open Range (S. G. Shaw) was eased up before reaching the post, yet recorded 54sec for half a mile, the last three furlongs taking 40 3-ssec. Beaumaris (R. W. Gould) and Cue (R. W. Shaw) ran their seven furlongs in lmin 34 2-ssec, the first four in 55 sec. Revolte was galloped over six furlongs which he covered in lmin 18 3-ssec. Johnny Peep (M. H. Hillis) was too good for Radical (P. Johnstone) over seven furlongs in lmin 33 l-ssec, the last three in 41 4-ssec, Eulogize (R. W. Shaw) and Fyxen (R. W. Gould) covered the same ground in lmin 36 3-ssec. All Serene, which will do her future racing in open company, ran six furlongs in lmin 19 3 ssec, the last four in 54 l-ssec. Assault, and Robin Dayes had little between them at the end of five furlongs in lmin 4 2-ssec, the last four in 52sec. Trafalgar Day (L. J. Ellis) and Resolute (D. M. Kerr) ran their five furlongs in lmin 4 2-ssec. the last four in 51sec. Resolute, is (veil forwad. Conclusion (P. Johnstone) joined Golden Amber (R. W. Shaw) at the seven furlongs, and they reached the finish in lmin 37sec, the last halfmile in 55sec. Golden Amber worked keenly.
