The death occurred yesterday at Sydney, of Sir Frederick Jordan, Lieut.-Governor of New South Wales. He recently underwent a serious operation.—P.A.
At New York the death occured ol Mr. Solomon R. Guggenheim, a millionaire copper executive and philanthropist. He was 88. Mr. Guggenhiem was- the last survivor of seven brothers, who developed one of the largest copper-mining enterprises in the United States.
..Captain J. L. Napier, officer commanding the mobile inspection unit, R.N.Z.M.E., has resigned from the Regular Forces to become manager of a motor company in Dunedin. He has had more than 38 years’ continous service in the Army and Territorial Forces. P
Airways passengers yesterday at Westport were: From Wellington, Mr T. Dobson, Miss Lamplough; for Nelson, Mr H. D. Hamilton, Mr F. Whale; for Wellington, Mr S. R. Smith, Mr H. Whitaker, Mr J. Thompson, Mrs A. Junker.
The Labour candidate for the Wairarapa seat, Mr. G. A. Hansen, whose hobbies are magic and conjuring, has been ending some of his election meetings with a demonstration of his skill, which is considerable. He is a member of the Society of Magicians. When he opened his campaign he advertised this added attraction, but later said in Masterton that he had ben told by the police that such advertisements were not permited. His opponent, Mr. B. V. Cooksley, as a counter-move, has been following his election addresses with lectures on gardening topics.
