RUNANGA NOTES

I Our Own Correspondent]. As a result of the death of Mrs W. Wright, past member of the Runanga Borough Council, and the resignation of Cr G. R. Brown, it was decided at this week's meeting of the Council that nominations be called to fill the vacancies. Those present were: The Mayor, Mr G. E. English, Crs. Brown, C. Barrow, J. Anderson and W. Rafferty. The Council decided to apply for signs for the Mills and Seddon Streets crossings. Building permits totalling £127 were granted. Regarding the Council’s application for compulsory stop signs to be erected at all railway crossings within the borough, the District Engineer of the Railways Department wrote that it was the practice to erect such signs only where visibility was very bad and the trallic density heavy. He asked the Council to reconsider its application. Permission of the Council must first be obtained before dances could be hedd on Saturday night, extending into Sunday morning, it was decided, after the Mayor had stated that he had received numerous complaints regarding the holding of early Sunday morning dances. Cr Barrow was appointed to replace Cr Brown on the Works Committee.
