AIR RAID ON SHANGHAI

HONGKONG, September 26,

A large formation of Chinese Nationalist aircraft yesterday made a “devastating raid” on Shanghai, the main target being the Pootung docks. A 3,00(j-ton freighter was hit and was last seen listing. At the same time warehouses near the docks were set ablaze by bombing and strafing. In an attack against Communist shipping round the Chusan Islands off the theking coast yesterday, Nationalist aeroplanes sank or severely damaged fifty vessels. The United States liner “General Gordon” has left Shanghai with more than 1,000 refugees, the first large party to leave since the city was taken by the Chinese Communists.
