SHANGHAI ALTERS ITS OPINION

(N.Z.P.A.—REUTER CABLE)

(Rec. 11.5).' HONG KONG, Sept. 27. Nearly ninety per cent, of Shanghai’s five million Chinese, including th e labourers, dislike the Communist regime, according to an American evacuee, who has arrived in Hong Kong to-day in an evacuee ship, the General Gordon. He said that on the walls outside the wharf from which the liner sailed there were large posters of the labour unions, apologising to the foreigners for an unfriendly attitude towards them in the past months. The posters, which are in both English and Chinese, said that the workers have been foolish to believe the Communists, and they now realised tha'. the foreigners were their friends. They hoped that thos e sailing in the General Gordon would soon return to China.
