WASHINGTON, Sept 25,

Senator Robert Taft (Republican, Ohio) to-day urged that the United States return speedily to friendly relations with Spain as a step towaids the strengthening of the North Atlantic defences; Senator Taft, who leads the Republican policy committee in the Senate said that Spain should be invited into the community of nations prepared to fight the advances of Communism.

•‘There is great strategic value in having the friendship of Spain,” he added. “She is in a key military position as far as Europe is concerned. There is no reason why we should not recognise her fully in a diplomatic way and send an ambassador to Madrid.”
