LABOUR EASILY WINS CRITICAL ENGLISH BE-ELECTION

LONDON, Feb. 24. Labour retained the South Hammersmith seat at to-day’ by-election, which resulted: —• W. T. Williams (Labour) .... 15,223 Anthony Fell (Conservative) 13,610

Labour’s general election majority was 3458. Since then there had been a considerable change in the electorate. More than 800 new voters have come on the roll. In the three and a half years since the general election, the Conservatives have been unable to wrest a single seat from Labour. To-day’s byelection was regarded as a real trial of strength between the two parties. It is estimated that something like 100 members of Parliament helped in the campaign. No senior Cabinet Ministers took part.
