Mr Percy Cameron arrived yesterday from Christchurch.

Mr a’nd Mrs W. J. Minchin, and their daughter Fay, who have been visiting Greymouth, leave by this morning’s express on return to Wellington.'

Mr R. D. Brown, Mayor of Hastings, has been elected president, and Mr C. C. Holland, of Christchurch, vice-president of the New Zealand Society of Accountants.

Mr and Mrs E. Dumpleton, of Blackball, left yesterday for Timaru, where they have purchased a business.

Cpl. K. B. V. Rodden, R.N.Z.A.F., Shelley Bay, Wellington, is visiting his parents, Mr and Mrs J. C. Rodden, Preston Road. •

Mr Frank Hill, of Westport, and Mr J. J. Rodden, of Waiuta, are visiting Greymouth for the Rodden-Wor-gan wedding to-day.

Mr W. A. Sheat, the sitting member, was confirmed unanimously as the National Party candidate for Patea. at the forthcoming general election, at a meeting at Waverley of the electorate committee.

His Honour, Mr Justice Northcroft, will arrive from Christchurch this afternoon and spend the week-end in Hokitika. He will open the Greymouth Supreme Court session on Monday morning.

Dr Hubert Smith, District Medical Officer of Health for Wellington, has been appointed director of the Hokianga medical service and medical superintendent of the Hokianga Hospital. He will leave ’ Wellington next month. He has been stationed in Wellington since 1941.

Mr W. P. Rodden, whose marriage to Miss Anne Wbrgan, formerly of the Greymouth Telephone Exchange, takes place to-day, was met yesterday by his workmates of the Rehabilitation Carpentry Training School, and presented with an electric toaster.

On Thursday, the King left Sandringham and returned to Buckingham Palace, after nearly seven weeks’ convalescence. The Queen accompanied him. Princess Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh, who have been staying at their home, Windlesham Moor, for nearly a fortnight, were at Buckingham Palace to welcome the King and Queen. The King looked very fit. but walked with a very slight limp.

Mr W. F. Ellis,. who has _ resigned from the staff of the Grey River Hospital, on which he held the position of storeman-ambulance driver - for the past five years, was farewelled by members of the staff yesterday afternoon. The House Manager, Mr S. H. Sofield, commenting on the faithful service given by Mr Ellis, and wishing him health and happiness for the future, presented him with a well-filled wallet on behalf of members of the staff. Miss Moffatt, the Matron, spoke on behalf of the nursing staff. Mr Ellis suitably replied, stating that he would be moving to Christchurch in the near future. A pleasant gathering concluded with musical honours.

The death this week occurred at his home at Seacliff, Dunedin, of Mr William Teihoka Parata, one of the best-known figures in Maori football circles for many years past, and a well-known leader of the South Island Maoris. Born at Puketeraki, in 1879, “Ned" Parata, as he was familiarly’ known, was awarded the 0.8. E. .last year. A son of the late Hon. Tame Parata, M.L.C., he was educated at Te Ante College, where he became prominent in all sports and particularly in athletics and football. He was manager of the Maori Rugby team that toured France end England in 1926, and of teams that toured Australia in 1910, 1913, 1922, and 1923. Mr Parata founded the Bay of Plenty Rugby Union, and was its president from 1911 to 1925, when he was elected a life member. He was also a member of the Rotorua Rugby Union and of other sports bodies. He was a member of the Araiteuru Maori Council and chairman of the Otago tribal executive. Mr Parata was also an Otago representative on the Ngai Tahu Trust Board. He is survived by his widow, two sons ,and two daughters.
