Invercargill Band’s English Conductor

INVERCARGILL, February 24. ' Notification of his acceptance of an appointment as conductor of the Invercargill Civic Band was received by cablegram from England yesterday from Mr Elgar Clayton, at present conductor of Faireys’ Aviation Works Band, following negotiations extending over the past few months. Consequent on the reorganisation of the band in recent months, steps had been taken to secure a new conductor and with this end in view, the band -advertised in English band journals, as well as elsewhere. Altogether 30 applications, all of whom had high qualifications, were received.

Mr Clayton has been bandmaster of the Fairey Works combination since 1941, during which time he has achieved marked success. Mr Clayton is not yet 40. He is married with three of a family, and his son, Colin, aged 18, is also in the band.'The family will travel to the Dominion as soon as passage can be arranged and Mr Clayton will begin his duties upon arrival in Invercargill.
