I’he Hauiti sailed at 9.15 this morning for Wellington with a full cargo of silver pine posts. The cargo will be railed from Wellington to Gisborne. After discharge at Wellington the vessel will go on to the slip for a few adjustments, and will then load for return to Hokitika. Arrangements are being made for the vessel to take a cargo to Milford Sound for the Government. Recent heavy rain and floods in South' Westland washed our further spans of the traffic and tram bridge across the Mahitahi River nemBruce Bay. The bridge was the only means of access to Bruce Bay since the main road was eroded and settlers are now compelled to use a ferry to cross the river.
On March 19, the Hokitika Workingmen’s Club will celebrate its first birthday. Although the club was oficially opened on August 26, 1948, the meeting to inaugurate the club was held during March. The club now has a membership aporoachinc 250. and the social committee is organising a special function to celebrate the birthday.
