LIMIT TO PINE FORESTS ON THE WEST COAST

There would be limitations to the size and number of exotic tree plantations on the West Coast, said the Commissioner of Forests, the Hon. C. F. Skinner, speaking at Westport. The widespread establishment of exotic forests was not possible said Mr Skinner, who said that exotic pines and other conifers did not grow successfully to millable size in areas where the annual rainfall exceeded 80 inches, as it did on many parts of the West Coast. The planting done or projected, was confined to areas where the fall was about 70 inches a year. Plans were being prepared to plant areas in the Buller district which had been acquired and were suitable for tree planting.
