CLOSING OF MINE CAUSES “STAY DOWN” STRIKE IN BRITAIN
LONDON, May 7. The National Coal Board has served dismissal notices on 800 coal workers at the Waleswood near Sheffield, where 96 miners have been on a stay-down strike since May 3. The board is determined to close the mine because it has been running at a loss. The stay-down miners picked from the youngest and fittest, are pledged to stay underground until the board changes its decision.
