Threat of Big Shipping Strike

AUCKLAND, May 8. “A show-down is coming and a general strike for the whole of the Pacific coast of the United States is threatened to start on June 15,” said the national secretary of the New Zealand Waterside Workers’ Union (Mr T. Hill) on commenting on the Oceanic Steamship Company’s statement. Mr Hill added that, while he knew little about the company’s 'decision he thought it might have been actuated by the threat of that strike. He said that there seemed to be a general propaganda move against the waterside workers, of which this move might be part. The Wellington agents for the Oceanic Steamship Company, Burns, Philp and Co., declined to comment on the information, which they have not received officially from the principal New Zealand agents, Henderson and Macfarlane, Ltd.
