GREY MAIN SCHOOL REPORT

The Chairman (Mr P. C. Thomson) of the Grey Plain School Committee, will present the following report at the annual meeting to be held in the school on Monday next: —• “It is very pleasing to report that all members of the Committee took a very keen interest in the school affairs—there being no change in the personnel since taking office. The members, were most regular in their attendance at meetings and harmonious relations exist between all concerned. The Committee has made an endeavour to improve the playing areas of the school. The removal of air-raid shelters some time ago left that area in an unsatisfactory state and we are pleased to mention that our efforts with the Public Works Department were successful in having the area returfed. Although not yet satisfactory there is a marked improvement. Our capitation allowance only allowed us to spend £8 15s on ground improvements and with this amount an endeavour was made to improve the front lawns of the school.

“Finance:—Khen the Committee

“Finance:—When the Committee credit balance at the Bank of New Zealand was £73 14s 2d, and we are pleased to report that, although our expenditure has been heavy for the past two years and with the increasing cost of materials, combined with the fact that £25 was transferred to our Post Office account, the credit balance at the Bank of New Zealand is £l9 16s 2d. Our balance in the Post Office account is £35 7s 9d, which includes £25 held in trust for the E. J.

Stratford prize. Our capitation moneys fixed by regulations amounted Io £7 10s Id per month which the Committee consider is inadequate to provide for necessities of the school and the Committee has done all in their power to further increase this allowance. The caretaker, Mr J. Gleeson, has carried out his duties in ah efficient manner. The school is kept scruptiously clean, and all floors regularly treated with disinfectant, oil. During the height of the recent epidemic all infant rooms were sprayed daily with a disinfectant fluid.

“Visit of Members of Board: —During our term the school received a short visit by members ol the Canterbury Education Board, and the Committee took the opportunity of drawing attention to the many requirements of the school. We are pleased to record that our efforts resulted in many repairs being effected and the long wanted destructor is now completed. Negotiations are now intrain for additions and alterations to various class-rooms. “Home and School Association:— The Home and School Association who have met regularly has given this Committee strong support and we desire to express our appreciation for their efforts. The Committee cannot speak too highly in this respect and we desire also to particularly thank those members who during the winter months gave their time to* provide a hot drink at lunch hour to approximately 80 children per day during the winter months. A traffic control at the school has now been put into operation and we desire to thank both the Traffic Department, the teachers and the children for their co-operation ir. this connection.

School —The continual change and the shortage of teachers during our term of office caused the Headmaster (Mr J. Graham) and ourselves considerable concern but the position was carefully watched by the Committee. The Committee here desire to pay a tribute to the Headmaster and other teachers who in the face of these difficulties maintained excellent control and supervision, which was credited by the inspectorate in their reports. It is also, pleasing to again record that for the past two years this school was successful each year in winning the Seddon medals. In conclusion I wish to record my appreciation for the loyalty and co-operation at, all times given me by all members of the Committee and I desire, also on behalf of the Committee to express sincere thanks for the assistance and co-operation of the Headmaster and staff of the school, the Press, the Canterbury Education Board, and finally the parents of the children attending the school.
