KUMARA NOTES

Mr A. Cade arrived from Christchurch, and has taken over the licence of the Courthouse Hotel from Mrs W. Irons.
Mrs G. Webber, of Christchurch, is at present visiting Mr and Mrs D. Mason.
Miss Mary McCarthy is visiting Mrs W. J. McNabb.
Mrs E. Brydon, who has been visiting Mrs Mason has returned to Christchurch.
Mrs Prendeville, of Christchurch, is visiting friends in Kumara. Miss J. Collins left by Tuesday’s express ' for Christchurch. At the April meeting of the Kumara Women’s Institute the vice-presi-, dent, Mrs Gibson, presided over a good attendance of members. _A welcome was extended to Mrs Palmer of 'remuka and Mrs Holmes of Tarata. Apologies were received from Mes* dames Ollerenshaw, Fitzpatrick and Sharplin. Remits to be dealt with at the Dominion Conference were read and discussed. Mrs Gibson read the Dominion President’s letter. The treasurer read the financial statement and two accounts were passed for payment. The roll-call “Subscriptions Please,” met with a good response. The Golden Thread talk “Shopping in Japan,” was given by Mrs Gibson in the absence of Mrs Fitzpatrick. Seven members travelled to the S.W. Federation meeting at Hokitika. An interesting demonstration of an applique supper cloth and table runner was given by Mrs Gibson. Competitions' resulted as follows: Hand-made handerchief, Mrs Birss 1: Mrs Poole 2: Mrs Evenden 3. Kettle-holder, Mrs'Evenden 1; Mrs Hillary 2; Mrs Dillon and Mrs Poole 3 (equal). Best bloom, Mrs Sharplin 1; Mesdames Poole, A. Caithness and
Evenden 2 (equal); Mrs Reedy and Mrs Comport 3 (equal). The meeting closed with the singing of the New Zealand Anthem.
