CHINA’S ARMY GIVES UP FORMER COMMUNIST CAPITAL
(Rec. 10.30) LONDON, April 21. Reuter’s correspondent at Nanking states: The former Chinese Communist capital of Yenan, in the Shensi province, was evacuated by Nationalist forces late yesterday. A spokesman for the national defence said in Nanking that the evacuation was carried out in accordance with new strategy adopted three ago, and he added: “Yenan has been rendered useless, as all the military installations have been .destroyed.” The Nationalists’ escape of Yenan last April had been regarded as their greatest victory over the re-, bels. The only other strategic point recaptured from the Communists still in Government hands is Chefoo.
