OPPOSITION TO EUROPEAN COLONIES IN THE WEST

U.S.A. Not Siding with Other Republics (Rec 10.50) BOGOTA. Anril 21. United States would oppose any resolution on colonies which would prejudice the claims of interested iriendly European countries, said the Secretary of State. General Marshall, at the. inter-American conference to-dav Argentina, Chile and Guatamala have moved that the conference call for the elimination of the European Colonies in America. The conference to-day failed to reach an conclusion on the Colonial issue. ine conference appointed a working committee to investigate the matter further. General Marshall abstained from voting- on this decision.

The declaration of General Marshall followed = c ”°' r h by Senator Juan Bramuglia, the Argentine Foreign Minister. He denounced Britain for allegedly wresting the Falkland Islands from Aregntina by force of arms.

- General Marshall said that the United States held that the European countries should be given a hearing on the Colonies issue. Unfortunately this had been impossible at Bogota, because it was nurelv an American conference. General Marshall said that, the U S. policy was: (1) A reaffirmation of its devotion to the principle that dependent territories should be helped towards early independence. (2) That disputes over Colonies should be settled bv neaceful means, consistent with the United Nations Charter. (3) A re-iteration that we are opposed to the extension of European Colonies, or to any European political influence in this hiemisphere.
