MURDER BY DOCTOR BEFORE HIS SUICIDE

LONDON, June 27. The inquest into the deaths of Dr Robert George Clements and . his fourth wife, Amy Victoria Clements, and Dr James Montague Houston, who performed the post-mortem examination on Mrs Clement?, has concluded. The finding of the jury was that Clements murdered his wife and then committed suicide, and that Dr Houston committed suicide. Houston’s diabetic condition and over-conscien-tiousness were contributing factors to his suicide.

The Chief Constable of Southport (Lieutenant-Colonel Harold Mighall) said. at a press conference: “If Dr Clements had lived, sufficient evidence would have been collected to justify a charge of murder against him. Mrs Clements did not leave a will, but a draft will made out by her and her husband were found in their flat”.

The Daily Express states: Clements knew that one day he would kill his fourth wife, and when he did he would have, if challenged, evidence of innocence—his red leather and gold diary. This expensively-bound book, which was produced and read at the inquest, was a fake. Before he died he put up his* last big bluff in a life of bluff. Beside him was that scrawled note stating: “I cannot stand this diabolitical insult to me”. It was the last attempt to keep face of this once dandy doctor, whose Irish blarney made old ladies his fond admirers and fellow doctors his contemptuous detractors. A woman doctor, Dr Irene Esther KenworthyGayus, revealed that she was suspicuous of Dr Clements eight years ago, and she put the Southport police on his track when the third Mrs Clements died in 1939. Dr Gayus said that the police tried to stop the third Mrs Clements being cremated, but they were a. few minutes too late.

The Daily Mail state?: “What of Dr Clements’ first three wives? What of Dr Clements’ first father-in-law? There may never be an answer to these questions. The answer that may never be written in the police case books is that Dr Clements was five times a murderer. And the only reason he was not brought to justice is that there was no real motive for any of the crimes.
