HOKITIKA NOTES

I Our Own CorresDondentJ HOKITIKA, June 27. Yesterday morning there was some alarm among residents of Kanieri township, when a pond at the back of houses near the cricket pitch, usually about 40 yards in length, had grown overnight to over 350 yards in length. The waters had spread over all adjoining areas. An inspection was made by the County Engineer in company with the County chairman. It would appear as if some d'rainage tunnels to the river might be blocked. In the meantime the water is becoming a menace 'to residents living nearby. A Chevrolet five seater motor car disappeared front Westland Hospital on Wednesday night. It was located in a swamp on the seaward side of the overhead bridge just north of Kaihinu. It. was badly damaged'. The driver had apparently been unable to negotiate the turn on reaching the top of the bridge. The car had knocked down about eight of the concrete posts and 'then went down the bank into the swamp. It was hauled back to the road next morning and taken into Hokitika. The police are making investigations. The Gael was ready for 'sea yesterday afternoon, but owing to the illness of a member of her crew, was unable to sail. A replacement was secured at Greymouth and she is proceeding to Patea.
