ATHLETICS PHOTO FINISH FOR STAWELL GIFT

The Stawell Athletic Club will install a magic-eye camera for a photo finish of next year’s Gift, Australia’s richest foot race, if it is economically possible. The club president, in an interview, said that he realised something would have to be done to guarantee perfect judging for the famous foot-race.

The proposed move follows a controversy over the final placings of the 1947 Gift. Movie films and still photos taken near the line indicate that in the extremely crowded finish judges have given incorrect placings.

It has been claimed in some quarters that Les Streete was the rightful winner. After viewing the newsreels of the Gift in city theatres it is impossible to say that Streete actually won. It is certain, however, that' he finished in the first three. He definitely was not last, as placed by the judges.
