Kai-shek Willing to Negotiate

NANKING, May 20.

Marshal Chiang Kai-shek told the People’s Political Council to-day that the Nationalist Government still adheres- to the policy of solving the Communist problem by political means and was prepared to resume peace negotiations as soon as the Communists halted their rebellion. “We merely ask that they abandon the attempt to seize power by armed force and abide by the agreement for restoration of nationwide communications.” He added: “If the Communists will show their sincerity by deeds-, the Government will welcome peace and will seek a solution politically.” The United Press said Marshal Chiang’s statement assumed added importance in view of the student demonstrations and vigorous peace movement within the People’s Political Council.
