German Elections Give Majorities To Christian Democrats
Not more than 50 per cent, of electors voted at elections in three French zone states of Germany, Wiesbaden, Wurttemberg and _ the Rhine Palatinate. Officials attributed the apathy of hunger. The elections were to decide new provincial Parliaments and to approve new constitutions. In elections last November 58 per cent, voted. The Christian Democrats have won easy majorities with 147 seats. The Social Democrats hold 66 seats and the Communists 22. (Rec 10.25). LONDON, May 19. Unofficial final figures for the French zone State elections in Germany show that the Christian Democrats have gained majorities. The votes number 1,954,300. They thus represent about 72 per cent, of the eligible voters. The distribution of the seats are as follows:— Baden: Christian Democrats, 34, Socialists, 13; Liberal Democrats, 9; Communists, 4. Wurttemberg: Christian Democrats', 34; Socialists, 12; Liberal Democrats, 11; Communists, 5. Rhine-Palatinate: Christian Democrats, 47; Social Democrats, 34; Communists 8; Liberals, 7; Social Peoples League, 4. The three States, in referendums, have approved of the Provisional Government’s draft constitutions as follows: Baden, 67.9 per cent.,’ Wurttemberg, 69.8 per cent.; Rhine-Palatinate, 52.8 per cent.
