Nelson Education Board

At the monthly meeting of the Nelson Education Board held this week at Nelson, the secretary, Mr J. T. H. Thonton, reported that applications had been made for a grant to erect a new school at Birchfield. Because it was. l a grade VI school, the Westport North committee was granted permission to appoint a fulltime caretaker.

The appointments of Miss G. F. Cross, assistant mistress at Waimangaroa, Miss N. Tregurath assistant mistress at Westport North, and Mr G. W. Kearns, secondary assistant at Granity District High School were confirmed.

The Westport Borough Council advised that it still adhered to its dethat the portion of the old school site at Westport fronting Palmerston street be cut up for business sites. The Board decided to hold over the making of a decision till next meeting. Mr T. Fair reported that no tenders had been received for the removal of the wooden classrooms in the old school grounds at Westport and re-erection at Westport North School as an assembly hall. The Hector Youth Club wrote offering £2'o for the purchase of the Hector school building. The board considered the offer too low for a two-roomed building.

Karamea school committee applied for an increase in the school’s capitation because of the increased roll number through consolidation of outside schools. It was decided to increase the capitation grant from £6O to £9O per annum. Some heavy coal consignments have been handled at the Reefton railway station during the past, three days, and it is expected that, the tonnage mined for the week will be the largest for some months. One order includes 1000 tons for shipment to Wellington, and it is expected to clear this order from the yards in two days.
