In U.S.A. Zone CATHOLIC PARTY STRONGEST. LONDON, January 28. The Christian Democratic Union, which is Catholic and slightly Right of the Centre, emerged as the dominant party in rural politics in the American zone in Germany. In the local council elections yesterday it gained four times as many seats as the Social Democrats in Baden, and 43 per cent, in Bavaria. The final results were:— Bavaria: Christian Democrats 897,753; Social Democrats 333,728; Communists 46,945; Liberal Democrats 18,952. One community’s votes remain to be counted in the Baden district, where the Christian Democrats thus far have obtained 1867 seats, Social Democrats 445, Liberal Democrats 93, Communists 31, and others 106. Greater Flesse district voting totals were: Social Democrats 334,324; Christian Democrats 240,850; Communists 49,523; Liberal Democrats 18,565; others 81,786.
