WATAROA NOTES

I Our Own Correspondent]

Rev. Father Kelly, who has been conducting a mission in Australia, is visiting Wataroa and the Glacier district. Pie gave an interesting address on the scenery of the district on Sunday evening. The Public Works Department’s grader is at present working on the main south highway. The fat lambs, recently sent from Wataroa to Canterbury, are bringing good prices. In spite of inclement weather, about 500 persons attended the race meeting held at Harihari last Saturday. There were some excellent finishes, and the big race of the day was won by Trivella, owned by Mr. J. Martini. A ball was held on Saturday evening to welcome home Mrs. Mcßride, who had travelled 16,000 miles to rejoin her husband, Mr Don Mcßride, recently, returned from service with the R.N.Z.A.F. The hall was packed, despite showery weather. Music was provided by the Ross Orchestra, and Mr. Bert Stevens was M.C. The guest of honour was welcomed by Rev. Father O’Gorman and Mr. Nolan thanked those present foi* their attendance. Mrs. Mcßride was presented will a well-filled envelope on behalf of the residents of the district, by Father O’Gorman. An excellent supper was served by the Ladies’ Committee.
