THOUSANDS OF SHIPS TO GO ON IT SOME AS ATOM BOMB TARGETS. WASHINGTON, Sept. 20. A Navy Department spokesman disclosed that in order to reach a peacetime strength of 300 vessels, the Navy has planned to dispose of six battleships, eleven cruisers, three large carriers, one escort carrier, eighty-three destroyers, sixty-three destroyer escorts, sixty submarines, several thousand landing craft, and hundreds of other types. These are to be disposed of by scrapping, by salvage, or by use as atom bomb targets.

JAP SHIP THEY COULDN'T SINK. (Rec. 11.20) TOKIO, Sept. 20. The U.S.A. Navy has announced that the Japanese battleship, which American bombers could not sink, will be towed to Pearl Harbour. Thence it will be taken to San Francisco for a war bond drive. An Associated Press Tokio correspondent stated later that Navy officials said that they have received orders from Washington to do nothing about the N’agato pending instructions.
