WATAROA NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent) . Friends of Mr. Jim Shivas at Wataroa were delighted to learn that he was fit and well in Singapore where he has been a prisoner of war for some time. He is known in the army as the “Singing Corporal”, and his safety is big news. Advice has been received that Thomas Mcßride (Junr.) will return in a day or two from the Pacific area. Tom is the youngest son of Mr. Thomas Macßride, fanner at Wataroa, who has had four sons serving in the Armed Forces. The local school dental nurse is doing a fine job, as sound teeth contribute largely to the health of the children.

A return basketball match last Sunday resulted in a win for Wataroa by one goal over Harihari. A welcome visitor last week was Mr. Sam Roberts, who has been attending to milking machinery for the farmers.

Mr. T. Cummings and party have arrived at Wataroa to net whitebait. Constant rain and heavy seas have made for poor runs of bait so far. The dance held in the mill hall recently was well attended and very successful. Mr. Bernard Nolan and Miss Shirley Pamment won the Monte Carlo, and Mr. Arnold Nolan and Miss C. Butler were the winners of the Lucky Spot. Music was supplied by several local residents and Mr. C. Donnolly who had charge of the floor kept the dancers busy. Amongst.the visitors were Mr. Kelly Wilson of the Air Force, Mr. Stan Fleming, returned from the Middle East and several visitors from the Franz Josef Hostel.
