BOXING

Contests at Town Hall MAIN BOUT TO BOWMAN. I At last evening’s amateur boxipg > tournament, held in the Town Hall, under the auspices of the Manst Brothers’ Sports Association, a laige crowd witnessed an excellent piogramme of clever boxing. The V 1 bout between J. Tagelagi (R.N.Z.A.r.) and G. Bowman (Runanga) was one of the best seen in Greymouth toi a number of years. Prior to the opening bout, Mr J. E. A- McKeefry introduced the visiting Air Force team, , land their trainer, Flying Officer Me-; Kay, and before the concluding bout I thanked the visiting team for coming . from Christchurch, and the public for ■ their attendance. Messrs N. Kiely and F. O’Neill refereed the bouts, while Messrs T. Croft and N. Kiely | acted as judges in the main bouts. Mr : J. E. A. Ellis (Greymouth) 10.2, knocked ■ out B. Shaldron (Air Force) in the | second round. Ellis, who is a hardhitting lad, haci bis opponent in trouble from the start. Hamilton (Greymouth) 9.1, defeated G. Todd (Air Force) 8.12, on points. The first round was fairly even, with Todd getting the better of the exchanges. Round two was in Hamilton’s favour, while the final round saw some hard hitting, both , boys striving for a knock-out. Mr F. O’Neill was referee. J. Boddy (Greymouth) 9.5, knocked ; out W. Wedlock (Air Force) 9.2, in the final round of a three round bout. In the opening round Boddy forced the pace, but Wedlock, who was the better boxer, made him miss badly. , Clever work by Wedlock in the second 1 round was witnessed, but he was on i the canvas when the gong went. , Boddy forced the pace in five final ' round, and with a series of hard i punches knocked his opponent out. i Mr F. O’Neill was referee. I L. Mulcare (Ngahere) 5.5, drew' with T. Barclay (Greymouth) 5.6. ( P. McGuinness (Greymouth) 9.12, ■ was defeated by C. Miller (Air Force) 10.7, on points. McGuinness put up a i good showing against the visitor, who had an advantage in weight and , reach. The first two rounds were | even, but Miller had the best of the concluding round. Mr F. O’Neill was referee, R. Hynes (Nelson Creek) 5.10, de- , feated J. Easthorne (Greymourh) i 5.12, on points. N. Farmer (A.T.C.) 8.5, won on a foul from K. Martini (Runanga) 8.8. ' The first round saw both lads feeling their way. In th e second round Martini opened up with a series of uppercuts, and had his opponent groggy. Findlay (Greymouth) 6.10, drew with V. Tuck (Nelson Creek) 6.10. | G. Bowman (Runanga) 11.7, defeated J. Tagelagi (Air Force) 11.9, in the final round of a four round bout, on points. The opening round saw Tagelagi forcing the pace, but I Bowman stood up to some heavy ; punishment, and had slightly the better of the in-fighting. Round two saw both lads striving for a knockout, and at the gong Bowman had the visitor groggy. The pace was kept up by both lads in the third round, which was even. The final round had the crowd on their toes, as Tagelagi and Bowman exchanged punches in the centre of the ring. Bowman had slightly the better of the round, and got the decision. Mr F. O’Neill was referee.
