BLACKBALL NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent] Mr. E. Patterson has loft to take charge of a co-operative mine in the Kunanga district. Mr. M.P. Lyng, B.A. headmaster, ot the local school, has been appointed Rector at the Tuatapere District High School, and may take up his new position at an early date. This school has been only recently gazetted as a High School, and Mr. Byng will therefore be the first Rector. The residents here extend him hearty congratulations and wish him every success in his new .'sphere. Blackball has again been named amongst the winners for school environment. Sapper G. Clark (Blackball) and Private J. Mort ant (Roa) were on Thursday evening met on their return from the Middle East by a large crowd of school children and adults on the road and given a rousing reception as the cars bearing them and their relatives drew up. Mr. J. Bateman extended a welcome on behalf of the Soldiers Comforts Committee, to which the two soldiers replied. Mr. G. Anderson playing the bagpipes, preceded the cars to tneir destination, and the crowd cheered the returned men, who next Thursday will be the guests of the Soldiers’ Welfare Committee at a social at the Miners’ Hall. Mrs M. Clark of Christchurch has been here on a visit to her sister Mrs. Stenhouse. This week four residents have entered tile Grey Hospital for treatment: Messrs G. W. Nuttall sent - .. R. Colquhoun, 11. Jennison and W. Eckersley. In all cases their condition is reported to be satisfactory. Mrs. 11. J. Campbell, late propritress of the Dominion Hotel, was farewelled by the local League Football Club and the residents on Saturday evening at a social at the Miners’ Hall, and her popularity was exemplified by a crowded attendance. Mr. Ron Neilson, Club President, presented Mrs, Campbell with a biack and silver occasional table and a fireside chair, as a token of the esteem. in which she is held by Ciub members and in appreciation oi all she has done for the Club in the past. Mr Jas Walker (secretary) presented Mesdames Helen Campbell and Noleen Kidd with a silver teapot and silver fruit bowl each, as a token of the club’s appreciation of their great services in social work on its behalf. Mr. Wm. McVicar, on behalf of the local Boxing Association presented Mrs. Campbell with an overnight bag The speakers all expressed the regret of the community at the guest’s departure and joined in wishing her many years of continued good health in her retirement. Mr. Jas Campbell ,on behalf of his mother, his wife and his sister, very feelingly replied and expressed the family’s regrets at severing their connection with Blackball, where they had spent many happy years and had so many good friends. and music was provided by the “Adelphi" Orchestra. Mr. J. Neilson made an efficient M.C. A sumptuous supper was provides by the ladies’ commit te. Dancing was continued till a late hour, the company, dispersing after the singing of “Auld Dang Syne.” The death oi Mrs. A. D. Christie of Atarau removes a well known and highly respected resident of this district, a member of the well known Turner family, one of the earliest in the district. Of a cheerful and hospitable nature, a wide circle of friends regret her passing. The funeral took place at Ahaura Cemetery on Thursday a bus running from Blackball. The service at the Anglican Church, Ahaura and at the o-paveside was conducted by Rev. N. Clarke, and the pall bearers were Messrs Chas, and Robt. Avnsley and David and John Liddell, all nephews of deceased. The Domain Board at a meeting Ngahere League Eootball Club use of the ground until their own field is in order. The ideal club deputation discussed ways and means of financing the erection of a grandstand and change room at +he domain. The matter was lett to br< discussed at the Board’s annual meeting on Mav 6. The deputation also discussed the chances of having finnrl lighting to facilitate training and the matter was left for the secretarv to discuss with the Bower Board.
