GENERAL CABLES
FAMILY ALLOWANCES LONDON, Feb. 15 The Family Allowances BUI, the text of which was published to-day, provides for an allowance of 5s weekly for every child in the family except the first. It is estimated that there are 2,600,000 families who will benefit, with 4,400,000 children qualifying for a weekly payment meaning a total cost of £2,500,000 if the school age is raised from 15 to 16. The cost of administration will be £2,000,000 yearly. The Bill provides for allowances to start on a date to be fixed after the war.
(Rec. 9.10) LONDON, Feb. 16. A “Daily Mail” political correspondent says: The F'amily Allowance Bill contains a clause to enable the Government to make reciprocal arrangements for the benefit of children with the Governments of New Zealand, Australia and Eire, and it is hoped eventually to make provision for similar arrangements with Canada, and probably South Africa. This is the first time social legislation enacted in Britain has been linked with countries of the Empire, and _ may prove a forerunner of a tightening of Emoire bonds in othei respects.
